Nicotine in e-liquids comes in two forms: freebase and nicotine salt (nic salt). Chemically, it's the same substance – the difference is how it behaves when vaporised.
Freebase
The standard in classic e-liquids for more powerful devices. At higher concentrations, it is noticeably harsh on the throat, so it is used at lower strengths (3–12 mg/ml) and with a larger volume of vapour.
Nicotine salt
Nicotine bound to an acid (most often benzoic acid) has a lower pH, and therefore at the same concentration it is smoother on the throat. It makes 20 mg/ml possible in small pod systems and disposables with a tighter draw and less vapour – closer to the feel of a cigarette.
What this means when choosing
- Puff House disposables and prefilled pods use 20 mg/ml salt.
- Less vapour does not mean a weaker effect – on the contrary, salt is absorbed faster.
- If you're used to classic e-liquids, 20 mg salt may be too much for you – start with shorter puffs.
